The Film Stars Project is a non-profit organization that works with youth coming from traumatized neighborhoods that are labelled at risk or high risk, has a mental health barrier, or trying to overcome social barriers, and teaching them the steps of filmmaking and having them produce films on their reality so people can get a better understanding of their world and their struggles. Through negotiation, problem-solving, and group consensus, the youth will conceptualize and realize their ideas using the medium of film or photography.

Through involvement in The Films Stars Project youth will be led through the various aspects of understanding film production from start to finish including introduction to the equipment, use and function; concept development and story-boarding; script development; acting; and post production. The opportunities created through the medium of film production and photography are much needed for the youth of these communities who often feel a lack of hope for employment and are frequently stigmatized both within their communities and outside. Film represents both development of skill and of self, supporting a stronger sense of self, a greater sense of positive worth within their communities and the larger community of Toronto, and lastly, leaving the youth with the potential to be involved in the television and film industry of Toronto, often referred to as ‘Hollywood North’.

Our mission at The Film Stars Project is to dedicate all necessary tools and supports to assist young people to reshape their world and redefine their personal narrative by establishing building blocks of strong self-worth and self-esteem, and the technical and interpersonal learning that will lead these young people to become stars.

Building your portfolio

After finishing a component withing the program, the program staff will provide each participant with support in helping them build their portfolio. The portfolio we will help them with is acting and modeling. We will cover the cost in building this portfolio and connect them with the right people that can help them make the best portfolio.

ACTING PORTFOLIO:

The acting portfolio is a compilation of an actor's work. In the portfolio, we will provide them with free headshots, help them with their resume, and help them with their demo reels. Creating an acting portfolio can be a challenge, but it's worth it to have one as you start your career, and we want to give each of our young people a helping hand in getting a job in the filming field.

MODELLING PORTFOLIO:

For the modelling portfolio you need the basics: A headshot, full length shot, as well as editorial and creative shots. For the participants that need help with the modelling portfolio, we will connect them with a professional photographer that will take their head shots and we will cover the cost.
